Our Goals and Strategies 2011-14


The organisation's Strategic Plan has four goals, each of which has a purpose and strategy.  This overarching strategy sits alongside the Taiohi Māori Strategy that was developed in consultation with membership and Ngā Kaihoe (Māori Caucus).

Goal 1
Nga Rourou o Ara Taiohi: Connect the Sector - Whakawhanaungatanga

Purpose: Connect the youth sector by fostering a nationwide movement of people and entities who work with young people.

Strategies:
Foster effective local, regional and national relationships with people who work with youth.

Promote and encourage leadership in co-operation and partnerships.

Champion opportunities for the youth sector to connect.

Kaupapa: Māori are involved in a nationwide movement of people who work with taiohi.

Strategies:
Develop relationships with whānau, hapū and iwi who work with taiohi Māori.

Provide a Māori voice within local, regional and national networks of people who work with taiohi.

Convene a national Māori Caucus which uses kanohi ki te kanohi and virtual hui techniques to coordinate input to the Ara Taiohi Board.

 

Goal 2
Nga Kete o Ara Taiohi: Raise the Standards – Whakamanatanga

Purpose: Raise the standards in the youth sector by providing information and research, quality self assessment tools, education and training, and improving accountability of people who work with young people.

Strategies:
Impart information, resources and training.

Promote and undertake research, evaluiation and policy development.

Establish a professional body for youth workers.

Kaupapa: Improve the application of the Treaty of Waitangi based on tikanga and kaupapa Māori in the youth sector.

Strategies:
Ensure access to good information, resources and training for staff, volunteers and members.

Promote and undertake appropriate research, evaluation and policy development.

Share effective Māori models and programmes for working with taiohi.

Ensure that a professional body for youth workers reflects the Treaty of Waitangi.

 

Goal 3
Te Korowai o AraTaiohi: Champion Youth Development - Taiohitanga

Purpose: Champion youth development by providing effective leadership and a cohesive voice in issues affecting young people.

Strategies:
Co-ordinate a voice on issues affecting young people and those who work with them.

Advocate for the well-being of young people and those who work with them.

Influence and change public attitudes to young people and those who work with them.

Kaupapa: Champion youth development by providing effective leadership and a cohesive voice on issues affecting taiohi.

Strategies:
Appoint Kaumātua and Te Kaihautū to provide leadership at the governance level.

Coordinate a Māori voice on issues affecting taiohi and those who work with them through regional representatives on Ngā Kaihoe.

Develop a Māori communications strategy which ensures consistent branding and use of te reo Māori.

Identify Māori leaders within the sector to address stakeholders and the media.

 

Goal 4
Te Waikawa o Ara Taiohi: Promote Sustainability - Rōnakitanga

Purpose: Demonstrate effective management and ensure Ara Taiohi is a sustainable organisation.

Strategies:
Demonstrate effective management (including financial management).

Increase funding and partnerships.

Develop skilled and competent staff and governance.

Kaupapa: Support Ara Taiohi to be a sustainable organisation.

Strategies:
Develop Māori strategies and policies which contribute to effective management.

Increase funding and partnerships for taiohi-specific programmes.

Ensure staff and volunteers receive training in Te Tiriti o Waitangi and tikanga/kaupapa Māori as it relates to their work.
